Kingston upon Hull held the UK City of Culture title in 2017.Edward I granted the town a royal charter in 1299 and renamed it Kingston upon Hull. The wider city is associated with William Wilberforce, born here in 1759, and the poet Philip Larkin, who served as university librarian from 1955 until his death in 1985.
